A gummy smile is where the gum covers more of the teeth than usual, and can make the teeth appear shorter than they actually are. The result is a reluctance to smile, and many patients cover their mouth when they smile to avoid this being noticed. This can have a profound effect on a person’s confidence.
The condition can be genetic, i.e. can run in the family, or can be caused by medication, such as blood pressure medication, or anti-epileptic medication.
In simple cases, the gums can be re-contoured or re-shaped surgically, or more recently using lasers. This is a relatively simple, quick and painless procedure.
In severe cases, the gums may need to be lifted and the underlying bone may also need to be re-contoured. In some cases, porcelain veneers may also be required.
